Columbus (GA) Alumni Chapter was established on December 14, 1947, making it the third oldest chapter in the State of Georgia as well as the sixth oldest chapter in the Southeastern Province. Gordon Kitchen, a Fall 1926 initiate of the Omega Chapter located at Drake University, served as the first Polemarch; Dan V. Snedecor, Fall 1938 initiate of Alpha Sigma, was the Keeper of Records, and James M. Grant, Fall 1928 initiate of Phi chapter, was the Keeper of Exchequer. Among the other charter members were B. Donald Corbett, Thomas Henry Brewer, Jr., George S. Davis, Joseph P. Cheever, Wadsworth W. Gentry, Walter Lunsford, and Sherom Greer. The first three Brothers initiated into the newly chartered chapter were John L. Sconiers, Spring 1950; Wesley B. Hudson, Spring 1951, and George E. Pope, Spring 1952. Since December 1947, Columbus (GA) Alumni has initiated 124 uniquely dynamic Brothers into the illustrious Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Throughout the years, many Brothers initiated at other chapters in Kappa Alpha Psi have pass through Columbus (GA) Alumni; these brothers along with the Brothers initiated at Columbus (GA) Alumni have served as a shining example of what committed Kappa Men can do. We are extremely active in the community holding an annual Student of the Year competition and an All-star Basketball tournament that awards scholarships to deserving students based on criteria such as academic and athletic achievements. We also sponsor various local Guide Right Program activities including clothing, food, and toy drives in addition to the annual turkey giveaways.
The Columbus (GA) Alumni Chapter is a medium chapter with a large presence in the Southeastern Province and in all of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Columbus (GA) Alumni was awarded the 2003 Paul Wayman Caine Alumni Chapter of the Year – Grand Chapter; the 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2024 J. Michael Graves Alumni Chapter of the Year – Southeastern Province; and the 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 & 2024 Website of the Year – Southeastern Province . The Chapter has been the honored host of the 44th and 52nd Southeastern Province Council Meeting and the 2022 C. Rodger Wilson Leadership Conference – Southeastern Province. We have consistently been the home of outstanding Kappa men who have epitomized the fraternity’s motto of “Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor.”
The Columbus (GA) Alumni Chapter currently serves as the advisory alumni chapter to the Columbus State University Chapter, the Eta Theta of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., this chapter serves as a leader in the collegiate community.
For over seventy-eight years the Columbus (GA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi has served as a beacon of light in the Columbus, GA and Phenix City, AL community and a diamond in the Southeastern Province. As we continue into the future, the Columbus (GA) Alumni Chapter will continue to focus on achievement, service to the community, and the development of our Collegiate Brothers.
